From 2016 to 2019, the Learning Lab existed as a welcoming community destination, open to the general public, where visitors could learn about a variety of simple, affordable technologies that supported safe, healthy and independent living. Learning Lab staff provided hands on demonstrations and family coaching to increase awareness and comfort with low-tech tools for the home environment.

When the Learning Lab space was shuttered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, staff focused almost entirely on acquiring communication devices―laptops, tablets, intercom systems―that helped Cassia residents maintain contact with their family and friends when ‘in person’ visits weren’t possible. They worked hand-in-hand with Cassia’s Philanthropy team to uncover resources to fund these devices, many of which came from Cassia’s generous family members.

Currently, the Learning Lab collection is being reinstalled at Cassia’s home office location in Edina, in beautiful display cases donated by the Science Museum of Minnesota. The collection will continue into the future as an educational exhibit documenting the early Learning Lab and Cassia’s commitment to emerging technologies that help people live healthier lives with a little support from technology.
